Choosing your security and safety partner on the basis of  price  alone  is  very  straightforward  but  highly  risky. However,  considering  additional  factors  like  the  ones enumerated  here  is  subtler  and  would  require  more information  and  data  gathering.  To  this  purpose,  we bring to you this newsletter which we hope will help you develop a better picture about our company: Our con- tinued commitment to quality and service is the best tool at your disposal to protect yourselves. So, enjoy your readings and don't hesitate to contact us should you have any queries or questions! ZOD  Security N E W S L E T T E R Christmas  2002 from all the staff of ZOD Security Quality and Service are Critical Factors in the Decision Making Process T he   local   market   has   radically   changed   in recent years. Once, product quality and after- sales service defined the business. Nowadays, with the challenges of the current economical climate, the market has turned price-oriented whereby the highest  consideration  is  given  to  the  lowest  priced  con- tracts. Unfortunately, this trend has spilled over into the security sector. Whilst it is true that economical factors are to be considered in determining suppliers, it is equally true that superior quality and service are important, if not critical, issues in the security and safety fields. In  choosing  your  security  and  safety  equipment  provider, special attention should be given to the following essential conditions: Availability of supplier-trained engineers and sales per- sonnel to help devise the most appropriate security solutions Trained  technical  team  availability  and  ability  to  carry out installations in a timely and professional manner Maintenance and after sales services on a 24h/ 7 days/ week  basis  backed  up  with  the  latest  technologies  in communication and information management system Substantial reference list attesting to the reputation of the security company Product  quality  and  long  term  partnerships  between the security company and its suppliers, allowing for the ability to  provide superior service and spare parts Stocking of products for timely deliveries and repairs Sami G. 6 By measuring something unique   about   an   individual and using that to identify him, we  can  achieve  a  dramatic improvement  in  security.  The oldest     and     most     widely accepted biometrics is the fin- gerprint.   Newer   biometrics measurements include DNA from tissue  samples, voice pattern, face pattern or even the arrangement of blood vessels  in  the  retina  or  pattern  of    coloration  in  the cornea of the eye. Biometrics are employed either as a means of identifica- tion or of verification:
Gases and Vapors: Source of Danger Gas and dust are the result   of   natural   de- composition or ferme- ntation.     They     also arise from the modern industrial world. Conversion     process through  the  effects  of leakage,   storage   or handling further increases the risks of explosion, poison- ing, decrease in oxygen levels  and the insidious effects of polluting waste. Each gas has a specific density: Heavy gases tend to sink while light gases tend to rise. But contrary to liquids, var- ious gases can mix together. OLDHAM Gas Detection division designs and produces a complete range of gas detectors: from the  single-sen- sor   portable   gas   detector   to   the   largest   and   most advanced fixed installations. With its wide range of sen- sors, OLDHAM Systems provide an early and accurate information on most of the dangerous  gases. For more details, please contact our Eng. Walid Odaimy (walid.odaimy@zod.com.lb) Scource: OLDHAM Gas Book Hose Reel Fire Fighting Systems Requirements Despite all the research into develop- ing new and more effective ways for extinguishing  fires,  water  is  still  the best   solution   for   large   applications like buildings, warehouses and offices. Hose  Reel  systems  can  be  used  by building   occupants   to   contain   fires until the arrival of the fire brigade. In order to be efficient, Hose Reels must be properly set up to meet the following conditions: BS 5306 part 1 specifies that the water flow rate, at the most hydraulically remote hose reel, should be not less than 24 L/min with a minimum jet of 6m when it is in use simultaneously with the nearest adjacent hose reel The  water  supply  should  be  sufficient  to  provide  the system's demand for a period of at least 30 minutes Where town main is not available, a water tank of a minimum capacity of 1,450 liters should be used If one water tank is to be used for both domestic and fire use, the domestic outlet should be installed above the fire oulet in order to insure that the needed water required  for  fire  extinguishing  shall  not  be  used  for domestic purposes. ZOD Security N E W S L E T T E R Christmas  2002 Identification is more complicated, time consuming and resource-intensive.  Of  the  two  methods,  verification  is the  more  reliable  for  most  applications  and  offers  the lowest rate of false rejection at the fastest response time. Until   very   recently,   biometrics   technology   has   been reserved  for  the  very  high  security  applications.  Recent advances in this technology lead to a drastic reduction in cost without any sacrifices in reliability. This translated in biometrics  technology  becoming  available  to  standard access control and time attendance applications. In access control applications biometrics are selectively used to protect the access to high security areas of the enterprise   such   as   dealing   rooms   in banks,  archive  rooms,  data  centers  and server rooms. Biometrics have found their killer applica- tion  in  time  attendance  as  it  is  a  fool proof  method  to  prohibit  what  is  known as  buddy  punching  (co-workers  swiping the   cards   of   absent   and   late   friends). Time   attendance   terminals   with   finger- print  readers  are  fast  becoming  a  stan- dard fixture in many work places. Identification  seeks  to  determine  who  the  subject  is without information from, or participation of, the sub- ject.  It  requires  the  system  to  perform  one-to-many (1:N)  comparisons  with  templates  stored  in  its  data- base. Verification is when the biometrics system verifies the user based on information provided by the user. The user  can  provide  a  pin  number,  a  magnetic  or  RF (Proximity) card, or a combination. It requires one-to- one (1:1) checks. Biometrics in Access Control and Time Attendance Applications
