E W S L E T T E R The first issue of ZOD’s newsletter  was  born  in 1984.    It    was    called “Zod    Security    News” and featured a selection of   security   and   safety news articles about market   trends,   new   technologies, technical articles, general knowledge and  tips  as  well  as  our  company’s new services and developments such as  the  creation  of  the  engineering department.   Since   then,   we   have tried to issue such newsletters when- ever we felt the need to do so. Last summer,  we  had  decided  that  this e  n  d  e  a  v  o  r should be done     on     a regular    basis and   thus   the new   publica- tion  was  bap- tized “ZOD Security News- letter”   and   is brought to you three   times   a year.  So,  as  promised  and  despite these  difficult  times,  we  present  you with this third issue of our newsletter. We hope that you will enjoy reading our carefully chosen articles and that this  issue  will  bring  you  new  insight and   information.   Furthermore,   I would  like  to  welcome  your  com- ments and suggestions so please do not  hesitate  to  contact  me  with  any feedback. I also take this opportuni- ty to thank everyone involved in this collective   effort:   suppliers,   clients and our own ZOD team. Sami G. ZOD Managing Director ZOD's Newsletter is 19 Years Old! Following  the  1st  episode  on  “Anti-theft  Protection” previously  aired  on  LBC  and  LBCI,  the  “Teatime” afternoon show conducted a 2nd interview with Mr. Nabih Semaan, Sales Manager, covering all neces- sary  measures  against  “Fires  in  Buildings”  whereby fire  prevention,  detection,  evacuation,  containment and   fighting   were   explained.   The   interview   also included a live demonstration on the proper use of portable  extinguishers  and  their  maintenance.  Mr.  Semaan  further  took  this opportunity to highlight the need for voluntary implementation of proper fire safe- ty especially with the lack of execution of the Lebanese fire code that was pub- lished in the official gazette in 1997 and still awaits enforcement. In an attempt to stay abreast of the latest happenings in the extin- guishing  maintenance  department  and  to  adhere  to  the  Libnor standard, ZOD Security has lately re-actived this sector by hiring Mr. George Wakim who’s responsibility would be to manage this department. Mr. Wakim is an ex-employee of ZOD from 88 to 96 and  he  knows  the  business  and  our  procedures.  His  job  will  be mainly to make sure that said maintenance is carried out accord- ing to the Libnor Standard: Maintenance   of   extinguishers   should   be   carried   on   a   yearly   basis Extinguishing powder, although with a shelf-life of 5 years, should be emptied out and examined yearly and changed as per expiry date Partly used extinguishers should be completely refurbished Renovating our Extinguishing Department LBCI Conducts Second Interview GARRETT Weapon Detectors in the Local Market In  the  last  few  months,  ZOD  Security  has  supplied GARRETT’s  PD6500  Walkthrough  Detectors  to  the BHV,   Metropolitan   Hotel,   Algerian,   Spanish   and Quatar  Embassies,  and  British  Council  in  Lebanon joining   the   detectors   previously   installed   at   the Russian  and  Turkish Embassies  and  the  Casino Du Liban. This  weapon  detector  features  the  most  recent  detection  technologies.  When properly installed, programmed, maintained by a specialized team, and operat- ed  by  trained  personnel,  it  provides  the  highest  protection  against  entering  or exiting the premises while carrying metallic objects with the lowest levels of false alarms.  Also,  note  this  picture  published  in  cnn.com  -  ‘Chicago’  Triumphs  at Oscars  on March 24, 2003, whereby numerous PD6500 detectors are shown reinforcing security measures at the awards ceremony.

ZOD Security N E W S L E T T E R Spring  2003 Innovations at TECNOALARM - Italy New products designed by Pininfarina, the famous Ferrari designer, combining the highest technology and the best design. New microprocessor-based expandable control panels with vocal and digital telephone communicator featuring the RDV technology. These panels could be purely wired, wireless or mixed. In the wireless case, the use of RF monitoring software is a must to have the best possible installation as well as the use of the Integrated backup / restore utility to safeguard the configuration on the wireless devices in the case of replacement of the CPU board. Remote  Digital  Verification  (RDV)  is  a  new  technology  of  alarm  verification internationally patented by TECNOALARM. This function requires special RDV detectors  that  transmit,  in  the  case  of  an  alarm,  an acoustic signal to the control panel that is proportion- al  to  the  movements  detected  in  the  area.  The  RDV signal is sent via telephone line to a remote monitor- ing station or to the client's mobile phone and permits the discrimination between false alarms and real vio- lations of the premises. The RF monitoring software permits the verification of the interference (noise) level on the carrier frequency 433MHz through graphs. This can be done on site using a PC or at distance via the alarm system management software. Tele-assistance  through  special  alarm  management software that allows ZOD Security's engineers to per- form  the  following  tasks  with  the  permission  of  the client: Programming of the control panel Downloading all events Checking the status of the installation - both hard- ware and software - thus being proactive in detecting at an early stage any possible problems (such as low batteries or tamper) The new S- cubed   range   of alarm   sounders r   e   c   e   n   t   l   y launched by GENT   incorpo- rates    sound    speech    and    strobe effects,   all   in   one   range   of   alarm devices. This wide range is available for  GENT  conventional  panels  and GENT    34000/8000    addressable panels.  Addressable  S3  devices,  like smoke and heat detectors, are com- pletely   loop-powered   and   do   not require   separate   monitored   power sources.   With   the   introduction   of voice   enhanced   sounders   into   the 34000/8000 range, we now have the option  of  having  an  S-cubed  loop powered bell sound for the first time as well as standard speech messages. As   an   aid   to   commissioning,   an option to use the HandiLink IR remote control to turn on individual sounders and   adjust   the   volume   remotely   is available. This means physical access is  not  required  to  make  this  adjust- ment  and  is  only  active  during  the commissioning   process.   Some   key features are: Low    power    consumption    which means   more   sounders/loop:   200 addressable sounders on a 34000- system loop and 100 conventional sounders on a 0.5 amp circuit Strobe option equivalent to a stan- dard 3W xenon strobe and utilizing 1/20th of the power Strobe element of the sounders fully monitored for circuit failures Loop   powered   voice   enhanced sounders availability 4  voice  phrases  and  a  bell  sound available as standard and used for evacuation amongst other Possibility  to  have  a  loop  powered bell by using the bell sound in the voice sounder Sound-producing   element   in   the voice   sounders   monitored   every hour using a VLF tone All   messages   and   strobe   signals synchronized  accross  loops  in  the same control panel Sounders volume easily adjusted by HandiLink remote control TECNOALARM,  the  prestigious  Italian  manufacturer  of  high  quality  intrusion alarm devices and systems, recently introduced the following innovations: DELTA Scientific’s Raising Barricades Against Potential Terrorist Attacks The  uncertain  days  that  we  are  living  through have brought an increased awareness of the pos- sible  security  threats.  This  is  especially  true  for diplomatic missions and official buildings, which have been the target of many terrorist attacks in the past. One of the most potentially frightening terrorist attacks would involve a speeding car laden with high explosives crash- ing into a structure. For the last five years, ZOD Security has provided a reliable solution to this threat in the form of high-security crash-rated barricade systems from our principals, DELTA Scientific Corp. - USA, who can offer systems that are capable of stopping and destroying a 13 Ton-vehicle at speeds up to 80 KMH. The barricades come in different forms that range from retractable bollards to single or double buttressed phalanx-type barricades. DELTA Scientific is also one of the few companies to offer surface mounted barricades that can be installed on any surface without the need for any excavation work, making them ideal for installation in projects where such works cannot be carried out. DELTA’s barri- cades are approved by the US State Department and are installed in many US embassies  throughout  the  world.  To  date,  ZOD  security  has  successfully  com- pleted a number of installations in Beirut including the ESCWA building and the Embassy Complex. Biometrics and Access Control Surge and Lightning Protection Burglar Alarms installation and programming Fire Alarms installation and programming Nurse Call Systems Video Interphone installation and trouble-shooting CCTV, DVR and Multiplexers FM200 and CO2  Total Flooding Systems Over the course of five Saturdays between 11 Jan. and 08 Feb. 2003, in-house technical trainings aimed at improving the performance of our technical teams took place at our training facilities. Conducted by the relevant product engineers, subject matter included: In-house Trainings for our Technical Teams Voltage surges are momentary increases in the normal working voltage of a sys- tem (time intervals of only milliseconds). They are caused by: Direct lightning Lightning strokes within a distance of 1.5 km Switching operations in the power supply system These surges can affect power cables as well as data/tele- phone cables, causing anything from data loss to the total destruction of equipment. Effective protection begins with the installation of Surge Protective Devices  (SPD) on the power lines and all the data lines. These devices must be selected in a way to achieve  a  trouble-free  and  undisturbed  operation  of  the  network,  and  at  the same time reduces surges so that they are below the immunity level of the equip- ment. DEHN+SOHNE, our German supplier,  provides a full range of SPD’s for the various data applications available as well as for the power supply system.

P i e r c a r l o Gramaglia, Export  Manager  of  TECNOALARM  - Italy,  visited  our  company  and  con- ducted  a  couple  of  training  sessions on  the  new  generation  of  intrusion alarm systems recently introduced by this  well-known  European  manufac- turer.  The  first  training  was  aimed  at our  sales  personnel  and  covered  all of the new features of Burglar alarms while the second went more deeply in the technical aspects and innovations. The   successful   relationship   between TECNOALARM   and   ZOD   Security goes back to more than 20 years with hundreds   of   installations   that   bear witness   to   these   systems'   high   per- formances  inspite  of  the  often  poor quality of the electricity . Attending NOVAR's Security & Controls Seminar in Dubai Bulletproof Cashier Systems to Protect SNA & Medco Personnel Surge Protection for Data Networks Recently, ZOD Security installed Bulletproof Cashier     systems     at both  SNA  and  Medco offices. We have been equipping   companies and    embassies    with such systems for a long time now. But during the last couple of  years,  demand  has  increased  to protect   personnel   at   embassies   as well  as  in  companies  where  people deal with money. For this purpose we can   propose   tailor-made   solutions that  include  34mm  bulletproof  glass in   specialized   metallic   frames   with stainless steel bulletproof and vandal- proof   passe-document   to   exchange money or documents. This offers the best  solution  for  protecting  staff  that might be subjected to armed attacks. Furthermore, we recommend that an armored   door   be   installed   at   the entrance  of  the  cashier  room,  while surveillance cameras be installed and linked    to    special    recorders    for increased security measures.
